Best Scaling Subjects by State for ATAR
If you’re choosing senior subjects, someone has probably told you to pick the ones that “scale well.” Fair enough, but the best scaling subjects for ATAR depend on your state, because each state’s admissions centre runs its own scaling. Below are the results from each state’s 2025 report. The 2026 reports come out in December, so these are the most recent figures you can plan with.

Why some subjects scale up
Scaling adjusts marks based on how strong the students in a subject are across all their other subjects. In NSW, UAC sets each course’s scaled mean to match its students’ average overall achievement, so a high number means strong students take it. The subject’s difficulty doesn’t earn extra marks on its own.
Best scaling subjects for ATAR in each state
NSW (UAC)
Among courses with 500 or more students, the highest scaled means per unit were Maths Extension 2 at 43.4 and Extension 1 at 39.7, followed by English Extension 1 and 2. The average across all HSC students is about 25. A detail most lists miss in HSC scaling is that English Advanced (32.8) and Economics (31.4) did about as well as Maths Advanced (31.9). Students Students can use the ATAR Calculator HSC to estimate their results..
Victoria (VTAC)
On VCE scaling, Latin had the highest scaled mean at 45.0, then Specialist Maths at 41.5, with French and Chinese Second Language at 40.2. A study score of 30 became 43 in Specialist Maths, 35 in Methods, 34 in Chemistry and 33 in English Language. Latin’s result gets help from VTAC’s adjustment for languages. Students can use the VCE ATAR Calculator to estimate their results.
Queensland (QTAC)
Specialist Maths, French and German topped the 2025 list. At each subject’s median, a raw 82 in Specialist became 95.27, a raw 76 in Methods became 89.64 and a raw 85 in Chemistry became 90.36.
Western Australia (TISC)
Mean scaled scores were 69.2 for Specialist, 64.6 for Methods and 55.3 for Applications. Chinese Second Language was slightly higher at 70.1, and Literature sat at 64.2. TISC also adds 10% of your scaled score in Methods, Specialist or a language to your aggregate, which is a bonus on top of scaling.
TISC also adds 10% of your scaled score in Methods, Specialist or a language to your aggregate, which is a bonus on top of scaling. You can use the WACE ATAR calculator to explore your expected result.
South Australia and the NT (SATAC)
SATAC says scaled scores for individual subjects aren’t made public. Any SACE “scaling table” you find online is someone’s estimate. The ACT and Tasmania run their own systems too, so check with their boards directly. SACE students can use the SACE ATAR Calculator to estimate their results.
Subjects that scale down
In Victoria, a 30 in General Maths and in English came out at 28, and Foundation Maths dropped to 20. In Queensland, a median raw 80 in Psychology became 69.27, and a raw 69 in General Maths became 59.54. A subject scaling down still counts toward your ATAR. You just need a higher rank in it to get the same contribution.
Should you choose subjects for scaling?
Your position in the subject matters more than which subject it is. In Victoria, a 40 in Biology scaled to 41, which beat a 25 in Specialist Maths at 36.
Before you lock anything in:
- Check the prerequisites for the uni courses you’re considering. They override scaling every time.
- Be honest about your maths. Specialist only helps if you can hold a solid rank against a very strong group.
- Run a few subject combinations through our ATAR calculator with marks you could realistically get.
- Use this year’s report. VTAC recalculates scaling every year, and so do the other states.
Remember that subject scaling is only one part of university entry. Depending on your chosen course, bonus points and adjustment factors may also affect your selection rank.
One more trap: a scaled mean describes the whole group. UAC warns that its table can’t be used to convert your own HSC mark to a scaled mark.
The Bottom Line
Higher maths and languages are the highest scaling subjects in every state that publishes data, but scaling rewards the students who do well in them. Pick subjects you need for your course and can rank well in, then use the calculator to see what different combinations could mean for your ATAR. When the 2026 reports land in December, check your state’s numbers again.
