WACE ATAR Calculator 2026: Calculate & Predict Your WA ATAR

Planning your university pathway in Western Australia requires a clear understanding of how your Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) course marks translate into an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Whether you are estimating your school-assessed coursework, preparing for external examinations, or calculating the impact of subject bonuses, using an accurate WACE ATAR calculator gives you the clarity needed to set achievable academic targets.

Our interactive WACE ATAR calculator follows the rules published by the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) and the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) to estimate your Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA) and state percentile rank.

Selection rank adjustments (optional)

Some WA universities add adjustment points or set a minimum selection rank for eligible applicants (for example StepUp, Broadway and ECU Access). Enter any points you expect, then check each university's own rules, as schemes change every year.

Important: Your official ATAR is calculated by UAC (Universities Admissions Centre) after your HSC results are released. Any calculator, including ours, gives an estimate only.

How to Use WACE Calculator

What Is a WACE ATAR and How Is It Calculated?

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a percentile rank ranging from 0.00 to 99.95 (in 0.05 increments). It reports your academic standing relative to the total Year 12 school-leaving age population in Western Australia for your graduating year cohort.

For example, an ATAR of 85.00 indicates that you performed as well as or better than 85% of the total Year 12 age population in Western Australia.

SCSA vs. TISC: Who Does What?

  • School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA): Oversees the Year 11 and Year 12 curriculum, conducts statistical moderation on school marks, administers external WACE examinations, and issues your WACE certificate and Statement of Results.
  • Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC): Responsible for university admissions in WA. TISC calculates your ATAR. It takes SCSA’s moderated combined marks, scales them to account for competition across subjects, applies subject bonuses, builds your Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA), and converts that aggregate into an ATAR.

Step-by-Step: How Your WACE Marks Turn into an ATAR

Converting classroom achievements into a university entrance rank follows four steps governed by SCSA and TISC.

  1. 1

    Combined Mark Formation 50/50 Rule

For every Year 12 ATAR course, SCSA generates a Combined Mark (out of 100) using equal 50% contributions:

    50%

    School-assessed mark

Coursework and mock exam marks adjusted by SCSA through statistical moderation, so school assessments across different high schools are directly comparable.

    50%

    WACE external examination mark

The mark achieved in the statewide end-of-year WACE examination.

    Combined Mark = (0.50 × Moderated School Mark) + (0.50 × WACE Exam Mark)
  2. 2

    TISC Subject Scaling

Because student performance and cohort competition vary between courses (for example, Mathematics Specialist ATAR vs. Psychology ATAR), TISC scales Combined Marks so that a scaled score of 60 in one course represents the same standard of overall academic achievement as a scaled score of 60 in any other course.

    Scaled 60
    Mathematics Specialist

    Psychology

Calculating the Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA)

TISC calculates your Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA) by adding together your best four scaled scores plus any eligible subject bonuses.

    Official TISC Calculation Rules

    • Best four scaled scores: Your top four eligible course scores count 100% towards your base aggregate (maximum base score of 400.0).
    • 10% TISC subject bonus: TISC adds 10% of your scaled score to your TEA for the courses below.
Mathematics Methods ATAR+10%10% of your scaled score
Mathematics Specialist ATAR+10%10% of your scaled score
LOTE ATAR+10%Languages Other Than English: 10% of your best LOTE scaled score only
    Bonus exception rule

You receive the 10% bonus for Mathematics Methods, Mathematics Specialist and LOTE even if those courses are not among your best four scaled scores.

    Mathematics course combination restrictions

Mathematics Applications ATAR cannot be counted together with Mathematics Methods ATAR or Mathematics Specialist ATAR. Methods and Specialist can be counted together. If you complete both Applications and a higher maths course, check the TISC Guide for how your scores are treated.

    400.0Maximum base score (best four)
    +30.0Maximum from the three bonuses
    430.0Maximum theoretical TEA

Because bonuses apply on top of your primary four subjects, the maximum possible TEA is 430.0.

    TEA = Scaled 1 + Scaled 2 + Scaled 3 + Scaled 4 + 0.10 × (best LOTE) + 0.10 × (Methods) + 0.10 × (Specialist)
    Are the bonuses changing?

TISC’s Board proposed a change to the TEA calculation in 2024, shown on TISC’s ATAR page as a change for 2028. In 2026 the Board postponed it until further notice, so the rules above apply to students finishing Year 12 in 2026. Check the TISC ATAR page for the latest rules before relying on bonus points in your planning.

Worked Examples: Calculating WACE ATAR and TEA

Scaled scores and ATAR conversions below are illustrative estimates based on historical TISC statistical distributions.

Example 1: Standard WACE Profile (85+ ATAR Target)

WACE ATAR CourseCombined Mark (0–100)Scaled Score EstimateAggregate Contribution
Human Biology ATAR6866.5Counted in top 4 (100%)
English ATAR6665.0Counted in top 4 (100%)
Psychology ATAR6563.0Counted in top 4 (100%)
Modern History ATAR6462.5Counted in top 4 (100%)
Mathematics Applications ATAR6058.0Excluded (5th subject)

Aggregate calculation:

  • Best four scaled scores: 66.5 + 65.0 + 63.0 + 62.5 = 257.0
  • Subject bonuses: 0.0
  • Total TEA: 257.0 (out of 400.0)

Estimated result: A TEA of 257.0 maps to an ATAR of approximately 86.70 on TISC’s 2025 table.

Example 2: High-Achiever Profile with Mathematics Bonuses (95+ ATAR Target)

WACE ATAR CourseCombined Mark (0–100)Scaled Score EstimateAggregate Contribution
Mathematics Specialist ATAR7281.0Top 4 + 10% bonus (+8.1)
Mathematics Methods ATAR7478.5Top 4 + 10% bonus (+7.85)
Chemistry ATAR7577.0Top 4
Physics ATAR7173.5Top 4
Literature ATAR7071.0Excluded from top 4 (5th subject)

Aggregate calculation:

  • Best four scaled scores: 81.0 + 78.5 + 77.0 + 73.5 = 310.0
  • Mathematics bonuses: (0.10 × 81.0) + (0.10 × 78.5) = 8.1 + 7.85 = 15.95
  • Total TEA: 310.0 + 15.95 = 325.95 (out of 430.0)

Estimated result: A TEA of 325.95 maps to an ATAR of approximately 97.95 on TISC’s 2025 table.

WACE ATAR vs. Selection Rank: University Adjustment Schemes

Your unadjusted ATAR reflects pure academic performance and scaling. However, Western Australian universities apply Selection Rank adjustments for eligible applicants. Schemes and eligibility lists change each year, so always confirm details on the university’s own website.

Frequently Asked Questions

TISC (Tertiary Institutions Service Centre) calculates your ATAR, not SCSA. SCSA calculates and moderates your course marks, while TISC applies scaling, adds subject bonuses, determines your TEA, and generates your final rank.

No. TISC calculates an ATAR for any student who meets the eligibility criteria. However, WA universities generally require a scaled score of 50 or higher in English ATAR, Literature ATAR or EAL/D ATAR to meet English Language Competence (ELC). If you fall just short, TISC may concede ELC in near-miss cases, and other pathways exist for demonstrating English competence. Check each university’s requirements.

Yes. Under the current TISC rules, you receive the 10% bonus for Mathematics Methods, Mathematics Specialist and your best LOTE course even if those courses are not among your best four scaled scores. See the note above on possible future changes to the bonus system.

No. TISC’s course combination rules do not allow Mathematics Applications ATAR to be counted together with Mathematics Methods ATAR or Mathematics Specialist ATAR.
